The Pro Display XDR is a sacred product. It has a 32-inch diagonal Retina 6K panel. Any computer, even with Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, might not necessarily make it its external display. Indeed, the Pro Display XDR is only announced compatible with certain Macs.
Which Mac for the Pro Display XDR?
Here are the Macs supporting the Pro Display XDR, provided that you are using version 10.15.2 of macOS Catalina or later:
- Mac Pro (2019)
- 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019)
- 15-inch MacBook Pro (2018)
- iMac 21.5 and iMac 27 inch (2019)
- Any Mac with a Thunderbolt 3 Blackmagic eGPU or eGPU Pro graphics box
And while these computers can support one Pro Display XDR display, not all of them can support more than one at a time. See below for the number of screens supported by different Mac models that support Pro Display XDR.
How many external screens per Mac?
Apple does not (yet) indicate the number of Pro Display XDR supported by 15-inch MacBook Pro and iMacs, but it’s possible to imagine that they would only support one Pro Display XDR, like the MacBook Pro 16 inches:
- Mac Pro: 8 4K screens, 5 5K screens or 4 Pro Display XDR screens
16-inch - MacBook Pro: 2 6016 x 3384 60 Hz screens, 4 4096 x 2304 60 Hz screens or a single Display Pro XDR screen
- MacBook Pro 15 inch 2018: 2 screens 5120 x 2880 60 Hz, 4 screens 4096 x 2304 60 Hz or possibly a single screen Display Pro XDR
- iMac 2019: a 5K 60 Hz screen, 2 3840 x 2160 60 Hz screens, 2 4096 x 2304 60 Hz screens or possibly a single Display Pro XDR screen
New: iPad Pro and Macbook 12 ″
As seen in this article, the Pro Display XDR can also work with an iPad Pro, via a USB-C connection. In addition, some Mac computers older than 2018 and 2019 can also support the screen without even an external graphics box. This is the case for the MacBook 12 ″ from 2015. Note however that in both cases, the resolution cannot be 6K. It takes a lot of graphics power to reach the maximum resolution of the Pro Display XDR.
